Biography
Named after a school P.E
teacher, a move influenced by classic rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd,
Cunning Elizabeth were formed in the late summer of 2001.
Renowned guitarist Wriggs, having just left local band ’Ignition’
was
approached by singer Tom Jewell, asking him if he wanted to form a
band.
The promise of gigs lured Wriggs into joining, and the search for
a bass player was underway. They had to look no further than
fellow school friend Thomas Fairhurst.
Drummers are always the
core of the band and Cunning Elizabeth tried a few options. The
first was Tom Marlow, with Jack Jewell playing guitar alongside
Wriggs. This didn’t work out and Jack moved to drums where he has
stayed ever since.
So the band was complete and
they started making music influenced by Bad Company and Humble Pie
while gigging occasionally around the area. A nervous first gig in
Henlow supporting the Whiskey Chaser Band was just a glimpse of
what was to come.
Tom Marlow would make another appearance for a short time on
keyboards but this didn’t fit the musical style Cunning Elizabeth
were looking for and they returned to a 4 piece.
After many successful gigs
in Baldock, Letchworth and Hitchin the band decided they needed to
expand their sound and the search for another lead guitarist was
underway. Local band ‘The Great Beyond’ had been causing a stir in
the local scene with thanks in large part to their lead guitarist
Jonny Boggild. Jonny and Wriggs joined forces in the winter of
2002 to make Cunning Elizabeth the band they are today, a band
driven by drum solos, harmonised singing and the finest lead
guitar work on offer.
